& relaunch

A fresh look

Magazines don’t stand still. They need to adapt to a changing environment and readership, so here at CMYK we are constantly developing our magazines. Often not so much that you’d realise, and sometimes so that you will notice.

Case study

PPA Scotland 2011 Award-winner: Member Magazine of The Year

In 2009 CMYK won a three-way pitch to design and produce Surgeons’ News, the quarterly membership magazine for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Part of the process was to provide a redesign, as the 96 page magazine was difficult to navigate and looked dated.

CMYK introduced a new size, as the previous dimensions caused paper waste and wouldn’t fit into a standard envelope. In addition, our new colour coded sections helped with navigation, and a simplified selection of fonts and distinct hierarchy eased legibility. We used real features to show the dramatic “before and after” effect. The new design was also implemented in the sister title SN Global, mailed to overseas members. When the Surgeons’ News website was overhauled and relaunched, the design echoed the printed publication – through the use of colour coding and navigation.

In addition to design and production of the magazine, we also manage the print of both publications, often visiting the printers to pass the jobs on press.
