26 March 2009 - As a new member of PPA Scotland, Neil Braidwood was pleased to have been invited to join the list of speakers at their recent meeting, held at the Scottish Parliament. 24 November 2008 - Highland Airways has asked CMYK Design to publish a new quarterly inflight magazine for their passenger routes, starting in spring 2009. CMYK will create all editorial content and also sell advertising space for the magazine which will go under the name aurora. At 52 pages, the magazine will cover lifestyle, city focus features, wealth management, sport and health matters, along with profiles and Highland Airways news content.
Highland Airways carried 28,000 passengers last year over a variety of scheduled routes, including Stornoway to Inverness, Anglesey to Cardiff and Tiree to Oban. In addition, the company run frequent business-related charter flights from Edinburgh and Glasgow to destinations in the south and north of England. Projected passenger numbers for 2009 are approximately 56,000. With the unique positioning of the magazine in aircraft seat backs, aurora magazine has a potential readership of 200,000, making it not only an exciting commercial opportunity, but also a valuable marketing device.
Edinburgh-based CMYK Design helped launch Caledonia magazine in 1999, and currently publish the award-winning membership magazine Scotland in Trust on behalf of the National Trust for Scotland. They are shortlisted for Best Small Publisher at the PPA Scotland Awards later this month.

01 September 2008 - Another busy month for CMYK Design sees new editions of both Scotland in Trust and Scotland Outdoors going to press.
Following the warm reception enjoyed by the launch edition, the publishers of Scotland Outdoors have worked with us to build on the magazine's strengths and produce what we feel is a real knockout issue! See www.scotoutdoors.com for a full list of stockists.
15 August 2008 - Variety is, as the saying goes, the spice of life and, here at CMYK, we relish all jobs big and small. With this in mind, we were pleased to be approached by the Saltire Society to create a new design for their 2008-2009 Syllabus.
The result is a stronger structure and a fresh, modern look which reflects the Society's forward-thinking approach to Scottish culture.
31 July 2008 - CMYK enters the blogosphere! We Make Mags is the creative scrapbook, in-depth news source and occasional soapbox for CMYK design. We'll still be posting news to this site but there should be a lot more to see over on the blog.
01 June 2008 - Fresh blood arrives in the office once again in the shape of advertising sales genie Graham Rigby. Graham will be stepping into Kirsti's shoes (not literally, of course, he'd end up with terrible blisters) while she is on leave to become a mum. Graham brings with him a wealth of experience not to mention regular consignments of doughnuts - we foresee a fruitful relationship even if we may not be able to see our own feet for too much longer!
28 May 2008 - The Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland (MDDUS) already employ CMYK to design Summons magazine and, impressed with our performance, they have now invited us to design and produce a new publication for them. The title, to be called FYI is aimed at Foundation Year doctors and will be produced on a bi-annual basis. In addition, CMYK will be managing the print and distribution.

9 April 2008 - Big Bend Publishing have chosen CMYK Design to create their new quarterly magazine, Scotland Outdoors. The first issue is in production and will be appearing with stockists shortly.
CMYK have also developed a clean, modern website for the publication with information about the magazine itself and about stockists who are carrying it.
We can produce magazines from scratch, redesign your existing magazine or even just handle the production of your existing publication. Previous projects include:
Scott House Publishing wanted a monthly, glossy lifestyle magazine for Scotland and beyond.
Originally acting as a consultant on the launch, CMYK quickly became the more widely involved, dealing with art direction of photo shoots and buying repro and print.
In just over four years, a circulation of 20,000 was achieved.
To re-brand and relaunch the National Trust for Scotland's tri-annual membership magazine, widening it's appeal while enthusing the existing members.
With an ABC audited circulation of over 179,000, Scotland In Trust is now the largest magazine of it's kind in Scotland and was awarded the title of Best Customer Magazine by PPA Scotland.
In addition to designing the magazine, CMYK also commission all editorial content, including copy, photography and illustration. We also sell the advertising, offering a design service to advertisers where required.
To give additional value to the Trust's members, we also created the Scotland in Trust website where people can enter competitions, find out more about the magazine, contact the editorial team and make advertising enquiries.
To relaunch the bi-annual membership magazine of the Keepers of the Quaich, an organisation dedicated to the promotion of Scotch Whisky overseas. The best of it's traditions were to be retained while adding a contemporary edge.
Under our direction, significant savings were made by the client allowing the adoption of perfect binding - transforming the readers' experience in terms of quality and professionalism. CMYK design the magazine and commission the photography. The window for production is brief and timing is therefore critical. We are happy to say that working efficiently, utilising onlione proofing systems, we have been able to excel in the face of these constraints.
In response the client's need to distribute a digital memento to it's members, we were able to arrange multimedia production and duplication services.
Redesign the existing membership magazine for the Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland.
A clean pictorial approach to the complex subject matter was an instant hit among the 30,000 GPs and dentists who subscribe. Strong covers utilising metallic inks raised the perceived value of the title.
Big Bend Publishing needed to create a brand new magazine focusing on outdoors activities in Scotland for a wide ranging audience. The design was to be picture-led and visually striking.
A modern and stylish production that is receiving enthusiastic responses from stockists, advertisers and readers alike.
Exisiting clients the MDDUS approached us to create a new magazine aimed at new doctors undertaking their foundation years. The aim was to use the title as a tool to promote membership of the organisation among this audience but there was a strong brief to make it more than simply a promotional brochure.
We created a stylish, modern design to appeal to the young and sophisticated audience our clients were targeting. The distinctive Pantone orange is eye catching and use of the stylish Soho Gothic typeface throughout means this design is up-to-the-minute but also simple and elegant enough to stay 'fresh' for years to come.
LPB Records were on the brink of releasing their first major LP and, having been disappointed by another agency's attempts were in dire need of good artwork in a hurry!
First of all, we listened to what they had to say about the band and how they wanted to be presented. We then worked closely with the label to produce artwork that perfectly suited the band's image and attitude. Both label and band were happy with the results and we get to notch up another happy customer!
A redesign with CMYK can inject new life into your title helping you reach new readers and transform the perceived value for your existing customers. We can even offer editorial design consultancy to help with your title.
Our experience in the field has put us in contact with a vast range of writers. Be it in the arts, consumer affairs or anything else you care to mention.
CMYK were employed to bring the National Trust for Scotland's guide book up to date. The result was another successful project and happy clients!
Need inlays/slip cases for that all important debut album? Just give us a shout - we'll make sure your release makes an impact!
Many years in the business have given us a great deal of knowledge and many contacts in the area of print. We can work with these trusted contacts to find the most appropriate technique and the best deal for your project.
We've seen magazines come and go and one thing we've witnessed is that advertising can undoubtedly make or break a new publication. Good advertisers will increase the perceived value of your publication allowing you to make more revenue from this avenue. Poor advertisers will cheapen your product and will make it difficult to attract more desirable ones in the future.
It's a minefield but, happily it's one that we are used to navigating so why not fall on our expertise to build a sound strategy to underpin the financing of your project?
